Who Carries the Reform Banner?

It was teed up as the perfect issue to win Independents and the much-coveted soccer-mom demographic whose swing can determine an election. But instead of… -
Riddle for Rules?
9 May 2012 | 6:14 pmThe current talk is that Rep. Jeanie Riddle will take over the chairmanship of the powerful Rules Committee next year. Caleb Jones, who is now vice-chair of Rules, is thought to be headed for a chairmanship of the General Laws Committee. Of course, Speaker-elect Tim Jones has probably made it clear that he’s not pinned into any position. Originally in May 2 MOScout.

On The Sidelines
16 May 2012 | 12:01 am. Some quick pix of life at the side of the race course. Above, a competitor meets that special someone. First below, a team sponsored by a local health insurance company. They were all speaking German. Bottom, the line outside Sweetie Pie's next to the race course in late afternoon. The place is said to have the best soul food in St. Louis. I've eaten there a couple of times and it sure is yummy. Since they got their own reality show on the Oprah network it takes forever to get a table. By 5:45, the queue on the sidewalk was easily 50 people. Sorry (again) about the lack of comments. I've… -
And Now Some Y Chromosomes
15 May 2012 | 12:01 am. A few scenes from the pro-level men's race at the Tour de Grove. Above, the leaders jockey back and forth for top position. First below, the pack whizzes by me while I sit on the curb with a wide angle lens. I took yesterday's portraits moments before. Ridiculously long work day on Monday. I'll come visit everyone as soon as I can. -
Women Can Fly
14 May 2012 | 12:01 am. At the Tour de Grove on Saturday, I watched races for men, women and handicapped competitors on three-wheel recumbent cycles. Everyone was impressive. The last time I tried to ride a bike I needed a cortisone shot in my knee. Really. The action I photographed was far beyond me. Toward the end I was sitting on the curb, shooting the men with a wide angle lens as they zoomed by. The woman above, who was among the leaders throughout the race (as in the next picture) stopped beside me to chat with a race official. She looked like a Valkyrie on wheels. Check out those muscles. I'd stay out of… -
Tour de Grove
13 May 2012 | 12:01 am. Big time bicycle racing comes to St. Louis each May. It's time for the Tour de Grove, which is, um, nothing like the Tour de France and similar races. There is a 1.7 mile / 2.7 km course laid out in the streets of The Grove neighborhood. Lots of good snaps. Should keep me occupied for days. -
By Invitation
12 May 2012 | 12:01 am. Last night saw the opening of the spring invitational photography show at Soulard Art Market, a gallery in the eponymous neighborhood. Below, a visitor gazes longingly at the entries of your humble blogger. Buy it, damn you, buy it!

2012 Draft Preview the Ocho: Persons of Interest
16 May 2012 | 2:02 pmI'm writing this Tuesday afternoon, while watching our dear Cardinals struggle to fend off the continued advances of the Chicago Cubs, who have just tied up the game again. Booo, says I. Boo. Anyhow, writing this from the past, I have no foreknowledge of things that will be by the time you read this, dear friends. I imagine the world of tomorrow is full of sassy robots and food in pill form -- or, perhaps, suppository form. I'm hoping for pills, myself, but I suppose we'll have to deal either way. Actually, come to think of it, if the food is all in suppository form, and you're really upset… -
Still More Words about the St. Louis Cardinals
15 May 2012 | 4:15 pmHey, you—potential St. Louis Cardinals content consumer! There's been some good stuff going on at SB Nation St. Louis and in our own FanPosts section, which can be read at this link in a kind of shadow-blog format with its own RSS feed. Here, with some commentary, are some links to that good stuff. SB Nation St. Louis The Legopiece Theater: Dugout Abbey saga has continued, with Alex Fritz's Game of Thrones-ian cast of characters expanding for an interview with the St. Louis Sign Guy and Yadier Molina's very discreet doctor. In non-Lego news, I've been really happy to run more of Nathan… -

St. Louis Cardinals Injury Update: Jon Jay to Disabled List; Shane Robinson Recalled
15 May 2012 | 11:35 amAfter today's starting lineup was announced with Skip Schumaker in center field, the St. Louis Cardinals announced that starting center fielder Jon Jay would be heading to the disabled list due to continued pain from the shoulder he separated during a collision with the Busch Stadium outfield wall last month. The club recalled outfielder Shane Robinson from Memphis just a few days after demoting the right-handed hitter to make room for Lance Berkman after the veteran's activation from the disabled list. Jay collided awkwardly with the center field wall while tracking an eventual home run… -
The St. Louis Cardinals Can't Win All The Regressing
15 May 2012 | 8:01 amYou Can't Win Them All or Luck Evens Out, Eventually aren't quite sabermetrically appropriate phrases, but there's something more satisfying about them than the idea of things regressing to the mean. I think it's because there's an element of moral judgment to the first two that appeals to me, as someone who always feels bad when too many things go his way at once. So when the Cardinals lost yesterday that irrational part of me thought, hey, why get greedy? The Cardinals can't win every game, or else you're going to get bored and you'll have to start a new Baseball Mogul franchise. They still…

Mothers’ Day 2012… because she’s worth it!
10 May 2012 | 12:42 pmRegarding Mothers: Moms are great - and I’m not just saying that because I’m about to be one! This is the one day a year where we take time out to say “Thanks for all you’ve done, mom! Like having me, putting up with me as a child, not sending me to the funny farm as an teen, and helping me grow into an adult that’s supposedly ready to have a child of her own. I wouldn’t be who I am without you and today I want to do something special to show you how much you mean to me!” Mom’s work so hard and we love them so much! They have definitely earned a… -

Moving to St. Louis during a Pregnancy?
26 Mar 2012 | 1:56 amSince my husband and I found out we were expecting our first baby, we have been reading all kinds of books. I just ran across this section of one of those tomes. Before you leave your old home, find a hospital in the area that you are moving to that you want to use and, then find a doctor (who is accepting new patients) who delivers at that hospital. Do this as soon as you are moving because it may take some time to get in to see the doctor for your first appointment A real-estate agent should be helpful in this situation. Ask about a hospital with a level 2 or level 3 nursery. These…

Happy National Volunteer Week: Mary Rosen
16 Apr 2012 | 1:30 pmI was looking at my post from this time last year (April 11th to be exact), and I was marveling at the numbers of individuals we served and the variety of services we provided and “amazing” was the word that kept coming to my mind! I remember starting the last paragraph with “…But as Red Cross Volunteers you know the work never really ends. Disasters can happen at any time, a heart can stop with no warning, a fire can leave a family homeless in a flash and the Red Cross has to be ready to respond…” and about 2 weeks later the Good Friday tornadoes kicked off one of the deadliest…
